Abstract: Speech-Language Pathology Assistants (SLPAs) serve as integral support personnel within the field, enhancing the efficiency and reach of services provided by licensed Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) in both clinical and educational settings. This presentation will examine the historical development and current status of the SLPA role in Illinois, with a focus on state-specific education and licensure requirements, delineation of scope of practice, and the supervisory obligations of licensed SLPs. Emphasis will be placed on practical considerations for integrating SLPAs into service delivery models, ensuring regulatory compliance, and optimizing clinical outcomes through effective supervision and collaboration.

(63) The 2025 Illinois Speech Language Pathology Guide: Eligibility and Workload Analysis
Location: North Pavilion 1
Professional: Karen L. Kockler, MA, CCC, SLP-L – Private Practice
Abstract: This presentation will review the recently updated eligibility section of the Illinois Speech Language Pathology Guide: Eligibility and Workload Analysis. The presenter has collaborated with ISBE’s Special Education Department and speech language pathology coordinators in Illinois to identify the most current eligibility and dismissal considerations, founded in IDEA federal law, principles and best practices. It is hoped that this revised Guide will assist school-based SLPs and audiologists in making appropriate clinical decisions when identifying adverse effect(s), educational and functional impact, and access to a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE). SLPs and audiologists in Early Intervention will gain knowledge by learning what constitutes eligibility in the school setting, which will aid decision-making for transitioning clients/patients into preschool and Early Childhood Special Education programs.
