A novel area in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) to create more personalized, efficient, and context-aware communication tools for individuals with communication disabilities. Scarinci et al. (2024) discussed innovative applications, such as AI-driven predictive text, natural language processing for more conversational output, and rapid creation of “just-in-time” visual supports. While these technologies have the potential to increase autonomy and accessibility, they also raise important ethical questions regarding privacy, user consent, and representation of the user’s authentic voice. As AI becomes more embedded in AAC systems, how can speech-language pathologists ensure that the technology enhances communication without replacing the user’s voice or compromising their privacy?
