Supervision and Mentoring in Speech-Language Pathology

Karen Kockler, MA, CCC, SLP-L, has been a licensed speech/language pathologist and elementary education teacher for almost 30 years. She has worked with preschool through high school regular and special education students who presented with a range of deficits, including those related to articulation and phonological disorders, fluency, moderate to severe receptive and expressive language disorders, auditory processing disorders, and Autism Spectrum Disorders. She continues to “be connected” with the school setting through consultations and private practice. She is a Fellow of the Illinois Speech Language Hearing Association, recipient of the 2025 Exemplary Practice Award, former Vice President for Professional Services, former co-chair of the School Affairs committee within that division, and member of the School Affairs, Legs & Regs, and Billing and Reimbursement committees. She represents ISHA on the Speaking for Children Coalition (S4C), and also serves as ASHA’s State Education Advocacy Leader (SEAL) for Illinois.

Session length: Two hours

Activity Description: This presentation provided a 2-hour supervision CE/PD opportunity for attendees which addressed skills development, qualifications, requirements, benefits and challenges for mentoring and supervising Clinical Fellows and Assistants specifically for IL practitioners.

Session Agenda:

  • 0-30 minutes: Introduction, Disclosures, Learning Objectives, Skills Development in Mentoring and Supervising
  • 30-60 minutes: Mentoring Clinical Fellows
  • 60-90 minutes: Supervising Speech Language Pathology Assistants
  • 90-120 minutes: Case Studies Challenges and Successes.

Learning Objectives: After attending the presentation, participants will be able to

  • Identify the qualifications to be supervisors of Graduate Students, Clinical Fellows, and Assistants
  • Recognize the differences in supervision requirements between Clinical Fellows and Speech Language Pathology Assistants
  • Describe the benefits of recruiting and employing CFs and Assistants that will enhance services for students, clients, and for meeting the needs of districts and/or clinical facilities.

The participant form will require completion of participant information, assessment of learning objectives and the course evaluation. You are required to attend the entire recorded course to obtain continuing education credit. Each participant form will be cross-checked with the viewing log to ensure participants viewed the entire course. Any individual who did not view the entire course will not receive credit and will be removed from the ASHA course report.  ASHA CEUs will be reported at the end of each month.
