"The article reviewed this month was “Correlation Between Pharyngeal Residue and Penetration/Aspiration in Post-Stroke Individuals" by Guijo et al. in 2025. In this article, the researchers have found a correlation between the severity of pharyngeal residue and Penetration Aspiration Scores (PAS) which was not surprising. Pharyngeal residue severity was measured using the Yale Pharyngeal Residue Severity Rating Scale (YPRSRS). What was surprising to me was that there was not a location of residue that was found to correlate with increased risk of aspiration, especially with the pyriform sinuses located closest to the entrance to the airway. Was this surprising for anyone else? Why or why not?"
