Activity Description: This webinar featured audiologists and speech-language pathologists from varied practice environments engaged in conversations regarding the principles of the ASHA Code of Ethics (2023). Talking points included workplace examples highlighting ways in which the Code of Ethic impacts their professional behaviors. Resources were provided to facilitate decision making when ethical challenges may occur.

  • Summarize the changes to the ASHA Code of Ethics (2023) and associate how these changes impact professional roles across our scope of practice.
  • Predict at least two ways in which the ASHA Code of Ethics may impact each provider’s clinical practice and professional behavior.
  • Identify resources and support to facilitate resolving ethical dilemmas.

 

Speaker Bios:

Co-Chairs:

Michelle Zemsky Dineen, M.A., CCC-SLP, FNAP, is a speech language pathologist with extensive experience in medical speech pathology focused on adults and geriatrics throughout the spectrum of care. A former clinician and multi-disciplinary manager of rehabilitation services, she is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor at Elmhurst University. Her primary areas of clinical interest include critical care, exploring ethical dilemmas, and interprofessional collaborative education and practice (IPE/IPP). She is a Distinguished Fellow of the National Academies of Practice (NAP), an ISHA Fellow, chair of ISHA's Ethics Education Committee, and a co-chair for the planning and implementation of this webinar.

 

Kimberly S. Hoffer, M.A., CCC-SLP, is a graduate of Augustana College and Northwestern University and an Associate Professor and founding Director of Clinical Education for the Speech-Language Pathology Program at Midwestern University. In her career, she has worked in early childhood education through high school, owned a private practice, and served as clinical faculty at Eastern Illinois and Northern Illinois Universities. She is an ISHA Fellow, Vice President Elect for the Division of Professional Services, past Vice President for the Division of Educational Development, a member and past chairperson of the Ethics Education Committee, and a life member of ASHA.

 

Panelists:

Nicole M. Bing is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Disorders at Governors State University. She teaches courses in child language, literacy, and speech disorders, and supervises student clinicians in community-based clinical settings. Dr. Bing’s research is focused on narrative and expository language, connections between spoken language and reading comprehension in school-age children, and evidence-based language interventions for school-age children. She also explores issues related to multicultural issues and the recruitment and retention of BIPOC students in CSD programs.

 

Rima Birutis is a speech-language pathologist, research associate/member of the LEAD program at Northwestern Medicine Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital in Wheaton, IL.  She has 29 years of clinical experience in inpatient and outpatient pediatric rehabilitation.  Rima has advanced competencies in pediatric feeding and swallowing.  She has supervised numerous graduate students and mentored clinical fellows while at Marianjoy. Rima has served as co-instructor of the graduate level pediatric feeding and swallowing disorders course at Northern Illinois University for the past 10 years. She is also a certified lactation education counselor. Rima has presented on the topic of pediatric dysphagia and feeding difficulties at state and national levels.

 

Jeanane Ferre received a PhD in Audiology from Northwestern University. She is currently in private practice in the Chicago metropolitan area providing, exclusively, evaluation and treatment of central auditory processing disorders among children and adults. She is an Adjunct Faculty Member of both Rush University and Northwestern University and partakes in the external practicum site for the AuD programs of Rush, Northwestern, U of I, ISU, and NIU. Jeanane has been published in refereed journals and has presented at the local, state, national, and international levels on CAPDs. Her published work includes chapters in professional texts, peer-reviewed and invited manuscripts, and The Differential Screening Test for Processing (co-author). Additionally, she is a fellow of the Illinois Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ISHA) and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and is the recipient of several awards, including the Honors of the Illinois Speech-Language-Hearing Association and ISHA’s Clinical Achievement Award.

 

Maria Claudia Franca, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is professor of the Communication Disorders and Sciences program at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. She is moving into her post-presidential cycle at the Illinois Speech-Language-Hearing Association where she has been serving as Vice-President of Professional Affairs, Multicultural Track Chair, and as a member of the Multicultural Affairs Committee. Her research interests focus on learning and teaching in multiculturalism, higher education issues, and voice science. She regularly presents results at the annual ISHA convention.

 

Barbara T. Goodson, M.S., CCC-SLP is a graduate of Eastern Illinois University and a Fellow and Honors of the Association recipient of the Illinois Speech Language Hearing Association. Mrs. Goodson has worked as a public-school speech-language pathologist for over 35 years in southern Illinois. A former member of the Board of Directors of both ISHA and ASHA, Mrs. Goodson has also served in various leadership positions on various committees and councils and was recently awarded an ASHA fellowship. In addition to state speech language pathology licensure, Mrs. Goodson also holds a Professional Educator License from the Illinois State Board of Education with endorsement in the areas of speech and language, elementary, and early childhood education. In addition, Mrs. Goodson mentors and supervises graduate interns and Clinical Fellows on a regular basis. Throughout the course of her career, Mrs. Goodson has also worked in private practice, early intervention, home health, and hospital settings.

 

Kayla Hicks, M.S., CF-SLP, earned her undergraduate degree from Oklahoma State University and is a May 2023 graduate of Midwestern University. She is currently employed by Renewal Rehab, an Enhance Therapies Company, & UChicago Medicine Advent Health.

 

Mary Kirwan-Johnson received a B.S. in Speech Pathology/Audiology from Northern Illinois University in 1988. She received an M.S. in Speech/Language Pathology from Eastern Illinois University in 1990. She received an M.S. in Educational Leadership also from Eastern in 2011. She has been working for Champaign Unit #4 Schools since August of 2001 where she recently retired from the position of  Special Education Coordinator with the Assistive Tech, Speech/Language, Hearing, and Vision Departments. Mary has served with ISHA as Past President and on the following committees (at various times) School Affairs, Division of Educational Development, and Honors Committee.

 

Emma Kroeger, M.S., CF-SLP, earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and is a May 2023 graduate of Midwestern University. She is currently employed by Easterseals Joliet Region, Inc.

 

Elissa Larkin, M.S., CCC-SLP, is a Research Speech-Language Pathologist at the Center for Aphasia Research and Treatment and a Clinical Bioethicist in the Donnelley Ethics Program at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab in Chicago. Elissa earned her Master of Science in Communication Disorders with bilingual certification at Arizona State University and completed advanced training in the Clinical Bioethics Scholars Program at Northwestern Medicine Center for Bioethics and Medical Humanities. Elissa’s areas of clinical and scholarly interest include applications of ethical frameworks to promote patient rights and shared-decision making in rehabilitation practice, Life Participation Approach to Aphasia-centered research and treatment and exploring and implementing interprofessional education models to increase communication access and equity for all patients.

 

Sumith Liju, M.S. CF-SLP, received his undergraduate degree from Northern Illinois University and is a May 2023 graduate of Midwestern University. He is currently employed by Renewal Rehab, an Enhance Therapies Company.

 

Dr. Tena McNamara, Au.D., CCC-A/SLP, is employed as a pediatric audiologist with Mueller Pediatric Therapy and as a consultant with the Department of Education, Hawaii. She retired as an Associate Professor from the CDS Department at Eastern Illinois University and as an educational audiologist with the Special Education Association of Peoria County.   She served as President of ISHA (2018-2019), EAA (2012, 2019) and is currently ASHA President-Elect (2024).

 

Sarah Moon, CCC-SLP/L, is a speech-language pathologist for Brimfield CUSD 309 near Peoria, IL serving public and private/parochial students PreK through high school. She is a Fellow of ISHA and serves on the ISHA Executive Board as the Vice President of Professional Affairs which has oversight of the Ethics Education, Evidence Based Practice, DEI and Multicultural Issues Committees.  She is pursuing her clinical doctorate (SLPD) with Mass General Brigham Institute of Health Professions (MGH-IHP) in Boston, MA with an emphasis in supervision and clinical leadership practices.  

 

Nora Neri, M.S., SLP, earned her undergraduate degree from Northeastern Illinois University and is a May 2023 graduate of Elmhurst University with a multicultural/multilingual emphasis. She will be starting her CF this fall working for Bilingual Speech Solutions in the Palatine School District.

 

Tom Parton, M.S. CCC-SLP/L, currently works in private practice and is retired from McLean Co. Unit #5 schools. He serves as the Vice-Chair on ASHA’s Committee of Ambassadors, the Chair of ISHA’s Honors Committee, and a member ISHA’s Leadership Development Program Committee. He is currently serving on the ISBE Dyslexia Handbook Revision Task force and has previously served on other ISBE groups, including the ISBE Reading Instruction Advisory Group and the ISBE Reading Specialist Certification Task Force. Additionally, he has been an ISHA Fellow since 2009.

 

Dr. Heidi Ramrattan is an associate professor in the Communication Disorders & Sciences (CDS) Department at Eastern Illinois University (EIU). Dr. Ramrattan holds a Dr. of Audiology degree from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign and a master’s from Eastern Illinois University. Dr. Ramrattan worked as an audiologist for 5 years in a private practice and educational settings before accepting a tenure-track position in CDS at EIU. Dr. Ramrattan helped establish a listening and spoken language preschool program at Illinois State University (ISU) and set up an Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) protocol and provided hearing testing and identification of hearing loss for all districts within the heart of Illinois Low-Incidence Association (HlLIA). Dr. Ramrattan also provides testing (following a noise exposure testing criteria) for current active duty and veterans through a contract with Logistics Health Incorporated (LHI).

 

Angela M. Riccelli, Ed.D., CCC-SLP, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Disorders at Governors State University. She teaches both undergraduate and graduate level courses and advises the GSU chapter of the National Student Speech-Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA). She is a member of both ISHA and ASHA and is a licensed and certified speech-language pathologist. She currently serves as the ISHA Track Chair for Voice & Motor Disorders and is a contributing member of the ISHA Telepractice Committee.

 

Sarah Rosten, MA, CCC-SLP/L received her degrees from Augustana College and Northern Illinois University. As a licensed speech/language pathologist and founder/owner of Pediatric Interactions, she has worked with children of all ages and a variety of disabilities in the clinic setting, home, daycares and school contracts.  As a CEO, she continues to develop leaders, cast the company vision and develop strategies to execute growth and services provided to the community.  Sarah has been credentialed with the Illinois Part C Early Intervention (EI) System as a Speech/Language Pathologist, Developmental Therapist and Initial Evaluator since 1999 and continues to serve on the EI Committee for Illinois Speech/Language and Hearing Association’s (ISHA) Division for Professional Services since 2009. She has created and provided trainings for Illinois EI Training Program and was an adjunct Graduate-Level Professor in Department of Early Childhood Special Education at Elmhurst College from 2007-2016. She has recently joined the Midwestern University Speech-Language Pathology Program Advisory Board. From 2015-2018, Sarah was one of the co-founders and the president for WeeBits NFP.

 

Sharon Rzyski is a bilingual Spanish speaking speech-language pathologist who has worked in Illinois public schools for 23 years. She started her career in the Chicago Public Schools, and then spent 15 years working for North School District 112 in Highland Park.  Since 2019, Sharon has worked for Mundelein School District 120 (Mundelein High School) and Mundelein School District 75 (preschool through eighth grade) as a bilingual speech-language pathologist.  Sharon has presented on various topics related to bilingualism, dual language as well as speech and language topics to aspiring speech-language pathologists in Guatemala.  She currently serves as the co-chair of the Multicultural Issues committee of the Illinois Speech-Language Hearing Association.

 

Dr. Michael Sharp grew up in the small town of Milan, IL, and earned both Bachelor’s degree in Speech Pathology & Audiology and Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) from Illinois State University. Currently, Mike is the Audiology Clinic Coordinator at Western Illinois University and teaches Speech and Hearing Science, Aural (Re)Habilitation, and Teaching the Deaf/Hard of Hearing. He also operates a seventeen office private practice. Previously, he served as President of the Educational Audiology Association, VP of Audiological Affairs for the Illinois Speech-Language Hearing Association, and currently is a member of ASHA's Healthcare Economics Committee. 

 

Jessica Zulueta, M.S CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert AVEd, is an Assistive Technology Specialist. Jessica works at Carle Auditory Oral School and is a current member of ASHA. Additionally, she is ISHA's VP for Division for Professional and Consumer Development.

All courses have been approved for ASHA CEUs. See each course description for the number of ASHA CEUs available. To report your ASHA CEUs or to receive confirmation of course completion, please complete the Participant Form for EACH course. This form can be found in the confirmation email you will receive upon program registration. The participant form will require completion of participant information, assessment of learning objectives and the course evaluation. You are required to attend the entire recorded course to obtain continuing education credit. Each participant form will be cross-checked with the viewing log to ensure participants viewed the entire course. Any individual who did not view the entire course will not receive credit and will be removed from the ASHA course report.  ASHA CEUs will be reported at the end of each month.
