Connecting Conversations Series - What is identity and how does it impact our work?
This conversation will explore the visible and invisible aspects of identity, and how they impact our work as SLPs and audiologists. Through personal reflection, group discussion, and creative activities, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how identity influences the way we relate to others and show up in the world.
Participants will walk away with a greater understanding of how their unique combination of visible and invisible identities influences the way they experience the world and do their work.

Valerie Brosius
Valerie is a certified bilingual speech language pathologist and instructor at Northern Illinois University, teaching courses related to cultural competency, bilingualism, bilingual assessment, and bilingual special education. Valerie has developed bilingual special education and MTSS programs across the full continuum of services. She has presented on the intersection of language, culture, and identity as they relate to student achievement and the impact of curricular resources, processes, and practices. Valerie is ISHA’s Past President.
Amina Dreessen
Amina (she/her) is a recent graduate of the Rush University Speech Language Pathology program who completed her undergraduate degree at Northwestern University with a focus on power structures and social justice. Amina takes an emergent strategy approach to her life and work, and she is excited about beginning her career in the SLP field with a focus on mindfulness and transformative justice.
