Join the Illinois Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s Evidence Based Practice Committee for a Journal Club exploring the use of thickened liquids in adults, including potential benefits, adverse effects, and ethical considerations, hosted by Thomas Giza and Valerie Heneghan.
Participants will read The Adverse Effects and Events of Thickened Liquid Use in Adults: A Systematic Review by Abrams et al. (2023) prior to the live discussion.
Beginning September 1, registered participants can read the selected article and prepare for the live discussion. During the September 30 discussion, participants will examine the strengths and weaknesses of the article, consider the benefits and drawbacks of using thickened liquids, and discuss ethical considerations related to clinical decision-making.
After attending the presentation, participants will be able to:
- Identify benefits associated with the use of thickened liquids.
- Identify adverse effects associated with the use of thickened liquids.
- Discuss ethical considerations related to the use of thickened liquids.

Thomas Giza, M.A., CCC-SLP is a speech language pathologist working in the acute care setting. He has worked as a SLP for 13 years with the adult population. In addition to bedside speech therapy, he is a clinical supervisor at Rush University Medical Center and guest lectures at DePaul University. Currently he is a PhD candidate and his research focuses on how clinicians interpret pharyngeal residue during Flexible Endoscopic Evaluations of Swallowing.

Valerie Heneghan
|
Valerie is a speech-language pathologist and feeding specialist in Glen Ellyn, IL. She is an Early Interventionist /Evaluator, University Clinical Supervisor, and has worked in a variety of settings including schools and hospitals. Previously, Valerie was the Director of Speech-Language, Feeding, and Assistive Technology Department at a large, multidisciplinary pediatric outpatient clinic and now owns her own private practice, PEDS PLEASE SLP, LLC. Valerie has earned numerous certificates to enhance her specialization in working with children with complex-medical and developmental needs, pediatric feeding disorders, fluency disorders, speech-sound disorders, and alternative and assistive technology.
Valerie co-chairs the Evidence Based Practice Committee for the Illinois Speech-Language-Hearing Association and provides mentoring as well as presents on specialty topics at local conferences. Valerie’s passion for working with pediatric feeding disorders has led to publishing her first Children’s Book, “Ready For; for the Food Explorers.”
