About Communication Disorders

We all know or have met a person who needs the services of an Audiologist or Speech-Language Pathologist.

Some Examples include:

  • A father who had a stroke and who now has difficulty remembering names of common items and slurs his speech.
  • A coworker who stutters severely.
  • A child in the neighborhood whose speech is difficult to understand.
  • A friend’s baby who has medical issues that hinder his/her ability to suckle, chew or swallow food.
  • An adolescent grocery bagger with Down Syndrome who cannot efficiently communicate with shoppers.
  • A favorite performer who has developed a hoarse and strained quality in his or her voice.
  • A toddler in your child’s preschool who has not started speaking yet.

The Mission of the Illinois Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ISHA) is to support and advocate for speech-language pathologists, audiologists, and the individuals they serve with communication, hearing, and swallowing disorders.

ISHA is here to serve as a source for the public in all matters related to delays, disorders and differences of speech, language, hearing, feeding, and swallowing.

We educate the public about:

  • Hearing problems
  • Speech and language delays and disorders
  • Swallowing and feeding disorders

We advocate for the needs of individuals with speech, language, or hearing disabilities at local, state, and federal government levels.
